Yoann Barbet is determined to establish himself as part of Brentford's first choice centre back pairing.

The Frenchman found game time limited in his preferred position last term, although he was regularly deployed on the left in the first half of last season.

Barbet said: “I want to play more than 20 games. In the first year I had 18 games at centre back and then eight in my position last year.

“I am a centre back and I'm not keen on playing left back. I want to play the full season.”

The battle for centre back is tough with captain Harlee Dean as well as Republic of Ireland and Denmark internationals John Egan and Andreas Bjelland all vying for a spot in the side.

Brentford celebrate Yoann Barbet's strike

Barbet is the youngest of the quartet and knows it is a tough battle against players of such stature.

He added: “It's tough. I'm the youngest of the four. There's two international players and one captain so it's difficult.

“It's good to have these players around me. I learn at lot from them. It's part of the job and I know why I'm here. I want to make the team even if I'm not an international or the highest player.”

Dean Smith certainly has a headache when it comes to choosing his matchday squad and starting XI against Sheffield United and Barbet believes that to be a good thing.

He explained: “It's good. It's good that it's difficult for the gaffer. Everyone is ready to play and we have to show that to the gaffer.

“I think it's better if it's difficult for the gaffer if he thinks he has his 11. I hope it'll be hard to pick a team for 46 games or more.”
