Kevin O'Connor has agreed to extend his stay at Brentford and is expected to put pen to paper early this week.

Like fellow fringe player Richard Lee, the Brentford veteran is out of contract in the summer, and has been in talks for a couple of weeks over a fresh deal, as revealed by Get West London.

Lee put his signature to a new one-year contract on Friday, and O'Connor, who is approaching 500 games for the Bees, is poised to join the keeper in signing for another year.

He said: “We're very close now. Everything is pretty much agreed to extend it by a year, it's just a case of sitting down to sign it.

“It is always a boost to know that you are still wanted. The gaffer has been very honest with me, and it's been an easy decision to make.

“I know my chances of getting ahead of the centre-backs we have are slim, because they are quality defenders – but I am all for the team, and as long as we get promoted, that is the important thing.”

O'Connor watched from the bench as an unused sub as Brentford took apart Crewe 3-1 at Gresty Road on Saturday – and had to admit he was impressed.

He added: “We put all the pressure on in the first half and played some really good stuff. We were very strong and completely dominated the game. It was a soft penalty to give away, but we scored some quality goals.”
