Dean Smith believes that Brentford have a squad capable of finishing in the top six, according to Sergi Canos.

The Bees finished 10th in the Championship last season and were impressive since the January transfer window, winning games while playing an attractive brand of football.

The west Londoners have, arguably, had the best transfer window in the league and there is confidence at Griffin Park that a special season could well be around the corner.

“I think the manager believes we can make the play-offs so it's a big belief from him to us and we have to respond by doing so,” Canos said.

“We want to do better than last year and hopefully we want to push for promotion. It's a long season and we want to focus on the next few games that are coming and prepare as best we can.

“It's a tough league and every team is going to be hard at home or away. It's going to be really tough for us if we want to do our objectives. We have to prepare well for what is coming.”

Middlesbrough, Sheffield Wednesday and Wolves have spent vast sums of money this summer in their recruitment, certainly in relation to Brentford's total spend.

And Canos believes that it's not how much you spend but it's the quality of your purchases that matter.

He added: “You don't get better players with big money. You just have to work with the budget you have.

“We're a small team but we've made really good signings, not spending as much as others did. It's a big league as teams are spending £10-12million in transfers but it doesn't mean anything for me.”
