Brentford need to stop showing teams like Sheffield Wednesday too much respect if they are to make it a successful season, according to Ryan Woods.

Last season's Championship play-off finalists, a team packed full of internationals and former too flight stars, were allowed to run riot in the first half at Griffin Park on Saturday, and only luck and poor finishing stopped them being home and dry at the break.

Instead, it was the Bees who took the lead after finally showing up in the second half, only to be denied when Wednesday finally got one in the net deep into injury time.

Woods said: “We're really disappointed with the way the first half went for us, and we came out for the second half looking to better that.

“We took advantage of it with the early goal and pushed on from there, but we were just unfortunate we couldn't hold on at the end.

“We gave them too much respect really, which is something we can't afford to do, we didn't get enough in their faces and influence our game.”

Despite the second half turnaround, there would still have been an element of daylight robbery had Brentford held on for all three points.

It would have been the polar opposite of the previous week, when the Bees dominated proceedings at Rotherham but somewhow came away empty-handed.

Woods added: “That sums up football to be honest. We were by far we were the best team last week, it's just one of those things in football.

“But we will take the positives out of that when we come back after the international break.”
