Romaine Sawyers believes the best is yet to come after his most accomplished performance in a Brentford shirt as Preston were beaten by five goals to nil.

The Bees midfielder, who signed from League One Walsall in July, has needed time to adjust to the pace of the Championship.

Sawyers produced his best display in red and white stripes as the Lilywhites were put to the sword and he set Brentford on their way with a fine pass for Scott Hogan to score the first of his three goals.

He said: “I feel I had a slow start but now I think I'm really settling in. The boys have been supportive as has the gaffer.

“He's had me for a long time and knows how to get the best out of me. I think if we have more performances like that I'm repaying the faith he's shown in me.

The midfielder added: “The assist is massive for my confidence. I'm not really a stat man so I don't look much into it. As long as the team are performing well and we're going in the right direction then I'll be happy.

“I could score no goals all season but if we go up I'll be happy. I want to be able to help the team attacking and defending.”

Sawyers accepted that he needed to adjust to the pace of the game and he has started to show the form he had at Walsall last season as he adapts to a supporting role rather than being the main man at the Bescot Stadium.

“Last year I had a lot of responsibility and we can share it across the pitch,” he added.

“The game is a bit quicker. That's been the biggest thing for me. I had to find the pace and I think I'm finding the pace.

“We had a great week starting at Brighton. It's all about the team for me. As long as we keep performing. The subs have been a credit. We're tightly knit and need to go in the right direction.”
