Ryan Woods believes the 5-1 hammering of Eastleigh in the FA Cup only serves to breed momentum and confidence as Brentford look to progress towards the higher reaches of the Championship.

The midfielder was composed throughout the 90 minutes as a Tom Field brace, Yoann Barbet penalty as well as goals from Lasse Vibe and Romaine Sawyers saw the Bees progress to round four in comfortable fashion.

And the former Shrewsbury man believes that the result should continue the growing confidence after wins in their first games of 2017.

The Brentford midfielder said: “We’re playing with confidence and it’s good for us to hopefully take into Newcastle."

In terms of the fourth round of the FA Cup, Woods doesn't care who they play as they try and extend their run further in the cup.

He added: “Obviously it would be nice to draw a lower league side to try and keep our run going and get to the quarter finals, but you’ve also got the big teams like Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham.”

Woods was full of praise for his team-mates after the third round fixture which saw all six goals come in the first half but said his side would have preferred to have kept a clean sheet.

He explained: “It breeds confidence again to have a clean sheet and especially with the way we were dominating the game. It came from a set piece which we’re disappointed with but we’ll deal with it.”

Brentford face Newcastle on Saturday after the game was rearranged from Monday following Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Birmingham in the third round means they face a replay.

The Bees are unbeaten in four games since an away defeat at Leeds United before Christmas and are looking to inch closer to the play-off places.
