Brentford midfielder begins recovery following successful operation

Bees youngster now set to be sidelined until December

Lay-off: Reece Cole

Brentford midfielder Reece Cole is starting the road to recovery after going under the knife for a knee injury which will keep him sidelined for at least two months.

The B team star, who has a habit of scoring spectacular goals, signed for League Two side Newport County until the end of the year back in August.

But after just five appearances for the Welsh club, in which he scored once (the winner at Coventry City on his debut), he returned to the Bees foe treatment after picking up the knock.

He had an operation on it yesterday and was all smiles afterwards, posting a thumbs-up picture from his hospital bed on Instagram afterwards.

The Hillingdon-born 19 year old made his full Brentford debut as a sub in the win at Nottingham Forest towards the end of last season and took part in a number of first team pre-season friendlies, scoring against both Aldershot Town and Oxford United.

“The staff and I are disappointed for Reece,” Brentfod's head of football operations Rob Rowan told the club's website before the weekend. “Going on loan to Newport was the next stage in his development and he was enjoying the whole experience up until now.

“I had a good discussion with Mike Flynn, the Newport manager, just over a week ago and he was really happy with Reece and could see the same qualities within him that we could. Therefore, it is disappointing that an injury has led to the end of his loan before he could gain further experience.

“Reece has a strong personality and will not be distracted by this minor setback at all. The technical staff had a meeting with him today to discuss areas that we want him to work on whilst injured via off feet conditioning sessions.

“He has been set some objectives by the technical staff during his rehabilitation and it’s important his focus is now on achieving them before hopefully being back to training in mid-December."

Debut: Zain Westbrooke in action at Fulham

B Team skipper Zain Westbrooke has also returned to Griffin Park after his loan spell with National League side Solihull Moors came to an end, haging made just two appearances for the National League side after being sent-off during his second appearance.

The 20 year old former Chelsea scholar has also, like Cole, made one first team appearance, coming on as a sub in the draw at Fulham on the penultimate day of last season.

“Zain was extremely unlucky to be honest,” Rowan added. “The staff and I watched his first start against Chester and agreed that he was having a great match up until the red card. Zain had never had a red card befor ein his career and it’s just unfortunate that his first came on his first start in the National League.

“The suspension took him up until the end of his loan period and, understandably, Solihull had to get loan players in to cover the void when Zain was missing and now don’t have space to renew the loan.

“The plan moving forward is to get Zain another move to the National League. His performance for them and performances for the B Team show that he can play at that level, or above, especially as it was only four months ago that he was making his debut in the Championship for Brentford.”
