Brentford keeper Mark Smith has extended his loan spell at Hampton & Richmond Borough until Christmas.

The in-form 19-year-old shot-stopper has become a real fans' favourite at Beveree since arriving on loan earlier this season, before which he was attracting interest from the likes of Wealdstone and Welling.

The 6ft 2ins keeper joined Brentford from local rivals QPR in May 2014 following a successful trial , having helped the Rs’ youth team finish second in the U18 Professional Development League Two South, with the best defensive record in the league.

He signed a one-year Development Squad deal with Brentford a month later before signing a one-year professional deal this simmer.

Smith made his first team debut for the Bees in their 3-0 pre-season win over Sporting Clube Farense in Portugal, and was again between the sticks for the friendly at Luton, and sat on the bench for Brentford's Championship clash at Middlesbrough.

Beavers boy: Smith in action for Hampton

He said: “Competition for first team football at Brentford is obviously fierce, so it’s important for me to play regularly to continue to show what I’m about and to gain match fitness, which playing for Hampton & Richmond has given me.

"As a professional footballer, these things are important, as you need to be ready to seize the opportunity when it arises.

David [Button] has been brilliant for Brentford over the past couple of seasons. He deserves all the praise that he receives, and I have learned a lot from him and Richard Lee, who was with the club up until the end of last season.

“You could say that I get the best of both worlds at the moment; as I continue to train with the Brentford first team during the week, and play for a Hampton side who are doing well and have their sights on promotion.

“For me personally, I feel in great shape at the moment, and I’m hungry to take the next step forward in my professional career. Having the opportunity to extend my loan with Hampton & Richmond will provide a really good stepping-stone to help me to achieve this. I am of course grateful to both Lee Carsley and Alan Dowson for their support."
