John Egan believes Brentford deserved at least a point at Aston Villa for their second half performance and could even have taken all three.

The Bees had fallen behind to a fine strike from £15million signing Jonathan Kodjia and were slightly over-awed in the first half.

But, after half-time, Dean Smith's side dominated and were rewarded in the final minutes as Egan's goal levelled the scores.

Brentford were close to nicking all three points at the end and can even look at Scott Hogan's wrongly disallowed goal as justification to feel as if they deserved to win.

Egan said: “I think we fell behind to a fantastic finish. In the first half they were a threat. We dealt with it quite well and we grew as the game went on.

“In the second half, we put them on the back foot and we deserved a point for the second half and could have nicked all three.”

Brentford made a tactical tweak at half-time, pushing Ryan Woods further forward and this nullified Villa's attacking threat and helped the Bees dominate.

Egan explained: “We just had to alter it a bit and get to grips with their wingers coming in off the line. We had a word about that.

“You could see in the first half we were half getting in on goal with some tidy play so it was about doing it better.

“We pinned them back and we had a lot of the ball in their half and looked after it really well. We definitely deserved a goal.”

Egan is now joint top scorer with Scott Hogan but he has no plans on trying to replace the striker up front.

“I stayed up after a corner and gambled and I found a bit of space in the box and was able to finish,” he added.

“I've played every game (since signing for Brentford) so I want to go on and if I can pop up with the odd goal I'll be delighted.

“I'm not looking to replace Hogan up front; I'll stay at the back but if I can give Scott a hand every now and again, I will do so.”

Having picked up four points from tough away games at Brighton and Aston Villa, Brentford know that they must turn on the style against Preston on Saturday.

Egan said: “It's been two tough away games and tonight is a good point and if we can capitalise on it against Preston it'll be a better point.

“There aren't many places tougher than Brighton and Villa. We believe we can go anywhere, play well and beat teams.”
