John Egan was more satisfied with the way Brentford defended against Sheffield Wednesday more than his fourth goal of the season.

The Irishman opened the scoring with a perfect looping header with Harlee Dean following it up just before half time.

The Owls threw everything at the Bees in the second half and Egan, along with the skipper, withstood the barrage with Fernando Forestieri only scoring a stoppage time consolation.

“It's always nice to chip in with a goal. It's a great feeling to score but the most positive thing was the way we defended,” Egan said.

“They threw everything at us but we stood strong, won our battles and cleared our lines. It's a very tough place to come.

“They have a very good chance of going up this year so we knew it'd be tough.”

He added: “It was an unbelievable performance from all the lads. We were well worth our 2-0 lead and it could have been more.

“We knew they'd come at us so we thought it was going to be very tough. To come away with the win is a great feeling and well deserved.”

Egan has been out of the side since suffering a head injury against Chelsea and he had told himself to take his frustration out on the next team he faced.

He added: “I was buzzing. I kept telling myself that when I do get a chance, make sure you come back and take your frustration out on the opposition and score a goal. I told myself before the game I had a good chance of scoring.”

Brentford take on Rotherham on Saturday and the mission is to back the wonderful win at Hillsborough up.

“We're all buzzing but it's on to Saturday now and we need to back that result up,” he explained.

“We need to carry this on against Rotherham. We need to keep going forward, trying to win games and remain positive in the camp and keep going forward.”
