Lee Carsley admits his heart still lies away from the dugout – whatever he manages to achieve as head coach at Brentford this season.

Carsley was installed in the Griffin Park hot seat last month until the end of the season following Marinus Dijkhuizen's departure.

Following a difficult start, Carsley has turned things around with three successive wins, culminating in Saturday's 3-0 triumph at Charlton Athletic.

But the 41 year old, who has insisted from the start that he does not want the job permanently, has not been swayed from that view by the recent run of form.

He said: “It's important the club know how I feel, and they know the way I feel. It's not a job for a first time manager – it's not a see how you go role.

“I don't feel I'm the right person for it, although I am the right person at the moment. My ideal scenario is to leave the team in a better position than when I found it.

Facing the press: Carsley speaks out

“The confusion after the Birmingham game (when Carsley first said he didn't want the job permanently) was due to a lack of clarity.

“This way makes it a lot easier for the club to go out and find the right person for the job rather than just rushing in.

“I do feel quite lucky to have been given the caretaker role, but you know where your own strengths lie, and mine lie in coaching and development.”
