Dean Smith would have preferred a home League Cup tie but is happy that AFC Wimbledon is a short distance for his Brentford side.

The Bees are set to be on the road for their first two fixtures but, unlike last year which saw trips to Huddersfield and Exeter, there will be less travel as the west Londoners face the short trip to Kingsmeadow.

Neal Ardley's side, though, will provide a stern test for the Bees after an impressive first season in League One last term.

Smith said: “We're not travelling all the way to Exeter this time. It's a short trip. It'll be a tough one as they want to get a scalp.

“They'll see us a scalp. It's a local game and not far at all. As I said last season, we want to progress in the cups.”

The Bees have not won a League Cup game in 90 minutes since beating Dagenham & Redbridge 3-2 at Griffin Park in 2013. They beat the Daggers on penalties 12 months later after drawing 6-6 after extra time.
