Dean Smith will weigh up whether to change Brentford's system and play two strikers up front and this could mean a shift to playing three at the back.

Since winning promotion to the Championship, the Bees have, by and large, played a 4-2-3-1 formation but, in recent weeks, goals have dried up especially from the three main strikers.

Lasse Vibe has failed to find the net in over 10 hours and has been struggling during games, although this can be put down to exhaustion given that he has not had an extended period of rest in over a year.

Marco Djuricin is returning to full fitness but has not completed 90 minutes since returning from the injury he sustained in November.

Philipp Hofmann is the only striker to score in 2016 but, given his characteristics, needs players pushing further forward to support him and has not been used since coming off the bench against Middlesbrough.

Winner: Hofmann celebrates against Nottingham Forest

Smith said on his three front men: “I think it's common knowledge that Lasse been playing for an awfully long time.

"We're trying to manage his training so he's not working as hard as the other lads at times. He's going through a dry spell but that happens with centre forwards.

“I think Marco is capable and he believes he can play 90 minutes but he has to show that day in, day out to make me pick him and it's the same with Philipp Hofmann.

“I feel when Philipp plays he's very good at holding the ball and we need bodies to go past him. If we look at the type of players like Lasse and Marco are.

“They look to get in behind and get space in front. Philipp is different. He likes to get a hold of the ball.

Rangers destroyer: Marco Djuricin

“He's got a fantastic touch, he's got better in the air but we need people to go the other side of him and stretch the back line.”

Given the difficulty Brentford's strikers are having at the moment there has been talk about how to get the most out of the squad.

A shift to 4-4-2 could solve the solution up front but then it may limit the ability of Alan Judge, who would either be forced out wide and play at the tip of a diamond formation.

The alternative, which appears more likely given Smith's time at Walsall, is the head coach opts to go for a 3-5-2 formation.

Smith explained: “We'll look at pairing Philipp with Lasse or Marco. But then you lose Alan Judge as you'd stick him in a wide area or play him at the point of a diamond.

Lasse Vibe scores for Brentford

“The only time I played two strikers at Walsall when I played three at the back. We need to work on that so the players can understand their roles.

“It could happen this season. I'm not adverse to changing the system. You look at the opposition and what we feel can hurt them.

“I'm not too sure we've got the players at this moment to play three at the back but, looking at it, it'll give me more of an idea.”
