Yoann Barbet admits he can finally put last week's penalty nightmare behind him after netting a fabulous free kick for Brentford yesterday.

The Frenchman skied a penalty in the Bees' 3-1 Carabao Cup exit to Norwich City on Tuesday night, leading to a series of amusing memes on Twitter around the theme of the ball drifting off into orbit.

It looked like there would be no chance to redeem himself at Bolton when Barbet was dropped to the bench, but an injury to skipper John Egan just 16 minutes in gave him his chance.

Just before half time, Barbet had those same fans who had mocked him days before singing his praises after opening the scoring with the stunning set piece.

“I was disappointed after the penalty,” said Barbet. “You can miss a penalty, but not like that. I shot a rocket 10 yards away.

“Some reaction on Twitter made me laugh. I didn't say anything because I was mad, but some pictures someone sent me were really funny.

Thumbs up: Yoann Barbet

“I'm pleased to react like this three days after. I came on and scored a great free kick. I've worked hard on free kicks for two years and it paid off today.

“Now I can laugh a bit more about Tuesday. I can understand the fans' anger as I didn't score and we lost 3-1 at home, so it was hard.

“To be fair, after Tuesday I was sad because I missed a penalty, but on Wednesday it was done and I had to move forward.

“Sometimes the football goes quickly and up and down. You have to stay focused, keep your feet on the floor and work hard.”

To make it even more of a head-spin of week for Barbet, he has been going backwards and forwards between England and his native France to be with his mother, who has been in hospital.

“It's strange days for me,” he added. “I was in France and she had surgery. She's recovering slowly. I'm happy to score today, for my mum, and I hope she recovers well.”
