Marcus Bean believes Brentford can reach the Premier League within the next four or five years and could even reach the play-offs this season.

The popular midfielder, who was at Griffin Park between 2008 and 2012, has been impressed with how the club have developed since his departure.

The 32-year-old still keeps tabs on how the Bees are getting on and still watches them when he can.

While Brentford made a bad start to the current campaign, Bean still believes a play-off spot is possible and can see them reaching the promised land sooner rather than later.

Brentford boss Dean Smith
Excellent appointment: Dean Smith

He said: “It started off a bit rocky. They brought in a manager who didn't have experience in the league. Lee Carsley came in and did an exceptional job.

“I think Dean Smith is an excellent appointment. He's someone I admired when he was at Walsall. It's just about keeping the squad together and mounting another push.

“I can see them just about nicking a play-off spot. It'll be tight but if they keep everyone together a play-off spot is in reach.

“In four, five years time I can see them in the new stadium maybe yo-yoing in the Premier League.”

Most popular goal conceded for Brentford fans: Marcus Bean scores for Colchester

Bean is held in high regard by the club's fanbase and he still has fond memories of scoring against the club for Colchester, which was celebrated by Brentford fans as, for the Bees, the eventual 4-1 loss meant little for an already-promoted side.

He added: “I love coming back here. The fans have been special to me ever since I was here.

“The last game I played against them at Colchester they were singing my name after I scored against them which is unusual.

“It was a special day for my mum and dad and my family. I'm back here. I'm supporting them. They're a big part of my life.”
