Brentford defender Yoann Barbet admitted it has taken time for him to get used to English football but he hopes to, one day, emulate Laurent Koscielny.

The 22-year-old joined the Bees from Ligue 2 side Chamois Niortais and has made two league appearances for the club so far, impressing in the 2-1 win over Preston.

He is following the same path as Laurent Koscielny, who moved from the French second tier to Arsenal and, after a difficult adjustment, has established himself in the Gunners side.

And Barbet is keen to develop as a player in a similar fashion to the 30-year-old France international.

He said: “English football is more physical and tactical. There are big stadia so the atmosphere is really nice.

“It's really tough because the strikers are really strong. It's not the same football as in France. It's more physical in England and we're the team that play football.

He added: “Koscielny played in Ligue 2 and now he's in a good Arsenal team. I hope to make the same progress as him and remain focused on the Championship and play more games.

“I've only played due to injury so I need to play well. I have a four-year deal to show how I can do.”

Barbet believes he is already improving by coming up against some strong players and is determined to prove himself in England.

He added: “It's different. The level is good so I have to be better because the players are really good. It's good for me to be playing against great players.

“It's a good opportunity to come to England. Everyone in France wanted to go to England. When Brentford called, I felt it was a good moment to come to England.”
