Brentford have finished their maintenance of the Griffin Park pitch and will now be letting the grass grow ahead of the new season.

The Bees, infamously, had to relay their pitch two games into the 2015/16 season but the Motz surface has stood the test of time.

The west Londoners did the same works last summer and the pitch, certainly to the naked eye, appeared just as good against Kaiserslautern as it did against Blackburn.

Chief executive Mark Devlin said: “We're doing what we did this time last year. We've got the semi artificial Motz surface that was laid down to help get over the problems of a couple of years ago to help us get over the problems then.

“All you do is you take off the top layer of that which I think they refer to as dead grassy material.

“We've removed that and then it gets reseeded and done again. The turf care contract has left site a couple of days ago.

Awful: The Griffin Park pitch in 2015

“It's all been re-seeded, brought down to a base level and now the grass will grow through the Motz membrane that is there that gives it the nice solid base.

“We've been delighted with the pitch last year and if we can get anything like that this season we'll be equally pleased.”

Devlin paid tribute to the Brentford groundstaff for their diligent work over the past 12 months and revealed the extent of their perfectionism.

He added: “The guys did a terrific job last year. There were still areas they weren't happy with but most supporters wouldn't have picked that up hence the reason we went through the renovations.

“We're delighted with the way it survived last year and hopefully we'll get more of the same. We're getting a bit of a dry spell but the artificial irrigation will help with that.”
