Kevin O'Connor has urged his Brentford team-mates to bounce back from Tuesday's defeat at Rotherham the same way they did from the Wolves setback.

The Bees tasted defeat for the first time under Mark Warburton last month with a 3-0 home defeat to title rivals Wolves, but responded with four wins and a draw from their next five games.

That run came to another with another 3-0 drubbing, this time by Rotherham, but club captain O'Connor believes his side will come back fighting against Oldham tomorrow and Sheffield United next Tuesday.

He said: “We weren't at our best, but we know what we have to do to bounce back as we have done it before, and there is a tremendous character and will to win in this side.

“The spirit has been great all the way along, and we won't let a setback like this affect it. We will be coming back all guns blazing next week, and even more determined to put things right.

“This will test us again, but we have been tested before. We need to find a response, but it's till only two defeats in 26, and another run like the ones we have been on will put us in a great position.”

The Bees veteran of approaching 500 games for the club this week signed a one-year contract extension which includes coaching duties – a path O'Connor is very keen to go down once his days on the pitch are numbered.

He added: “It's a relief to be signed up for another year. It was in the pipeline, but just needed signing. I hope to be playing for a few more years yet, but coaching is next step for me.

“I'm trying to learn off the manager and David Weir, and helping coach some of the younger players is something I'm doing in training already, and I really enjoy it.

“The gaffer hasn't said anything about officially joining his coaching team yet – you would have to ask him – but he's getting me involved more, and I hope that is the eventual outcome.”
