Dean Smith has warned the Brentford squad that they had better perform in training this week if they want to be selected for the FA Cup tie at Stamford Bridge.

As a squad, the Bees were miles below the required standards as they were beaten 2-1 by Wigan Athletic.

Smith insisted that the upcoming FA Cup tie with Chelsea had nothing to do with the loss and ensured that no positions in the side were safe.

He said: “I told the players before the game that if they didn't play well, they wouldn't play next week against Chelsea.

“We've got big games to come. They were told that last week and today. They weren't good enough. They've got to work hard in training now.”

Smith was as puzzled as the supporters who saw Brentford perform brilliantly in the 2-1 reverse to Newcastle to producing an awful display at the DW Stadium.

“If I could put my finger on it we wouldn't have had a performance like that today,” he added.

“We didn't pass the ball with any purpose or very well. The pitch isn't great here. They did a job on us and outbattled us.”
