Dean Smith has not been surprised by the fact Brentford have scored six goals since Scott Hogan's departure to Aston Villa.

The Bees put three past the Villans before the 24-year-old's transfer was officially announced and then another three past Brighton but it was in vain as the Seagulls scored an equaliser 17 seconds from full time.

Despite losing the 14-goal man, Brentford have actually looked more threatening with other players stepping up to the plate.

Smith said: “It doesn’t surprise me (that Brentford were free-scoring without Hogan). It may surprise other people, but we’ve got great belief in the players that we’ve got.

“I thought Jota was outstanding today, he deserved his goal and a great run to win the penalty. (Florian) Jozefzoon looks a hell of a player and Sergi Canos adds an extra dimension.

Opening goal: Jota

“I thought Lasse Vibe worked his socks off today and deserved his goal, but we looked like we’d score from midfield and Josh McEachran’s going through a great spell, certainly on the ball.”

Smith felt his side could have done better defensively against the title chasing Seagulls and was disappointed to come away with a point.

He added: “I thought we could have done better with the second goal. We all knew what a good player (Anthony) Knockaert is and spoke about doubling up on him.

“We never got close enough to stop the cross, I think it was Sergi (Canos) and Tom Field. Sergi had got there but Tom wasn’t close enough to stop the cross.

Late goal: Konstantin Kerschbaumer strikes

“Maybe Daniel could do better with the second one, I think he’s headed it from three or four yards, but with the last goal it was a super cross. But we should have won the game and that’s the disappointing part.”

Field was taken off late on as a precaution while Maxime Colin missed the game after a knee injury but the Frenchman is set to return to training tomorrow.
