Brentford are now among the form sides in the Championship but Dean Smith is not getting too carried away.

Bees fans should only look back at August and September to remember a time where the west Londoners were finding ways to now win.

But, since the first win against Bolton, the Bees have won three and drawn three to steadily climb the Championship table.

But Smith is the same person now as he was then with some fans calling for his head.

He said: “From the start of the season, we've never got too high or too low on results. We based the way we play on our performances and we felt they had been very good.

“Just because we've won three out of four it doesn't mean we get too high. The basics are still the most important things.

“We need to go and work hard, make sure we don't get out-run and out-fought by the opposition.

“The players are certainly standing up to that test every week and I believe we've got a great quality of football that the players use and that's helped us to get the goals that we've got to go and win the games.”

Brentford have developed as a side over the course of the campaign with Ollie Watkins, in particular, stepping up to the plate, while Neal Maupay's hard work has been rewarded by grabbing two goals in three games.

Smith added: “Ollie Watkins is in his first season in the Championship. He wanted to be the penalty taker.

“Neal Maupay was playing in the second tier in France last season. He started when Lasse was injured.

“He worked very hard unselfishly and didn't score. He goes back to the bench and scores again. They want to get better and keep developing. They're not the finished article by any means.”
