Lee Carsley has urged Alan Judge to repeat his man of the match performance against Rotherham on a regular basis if he is to earn his first Republic of Ireland cap.

The 26-year-old has played for the youth sides in his early career and has been included in Martin O'Neill's recent squads.

And Carsley, who made 40 appearances for the Boys in Green in his playing career, believes the Brentford playmaker must perform at an elite level in order to have a chance of going to Euro 2016.

He said: “I spoke to Judgey. He's been away with the international team so he's got to get used to performing at an elite level.

“An elite level for international footballers is the Premier League, not the Championship. He should be doing that.

“That's not surprised me today that he's done that. He's competing with players in the Premier League who are top performers.

“He needs to get on that level and he's got everything in his locker to get on it.

“His desire, commitment, work rate, technique and appetite – he's got the ingredients and he needs to put it together on a consistent basis.”

He added: “(Kicking the door down with performances is) the only way you get international recognition.

“The easy thing is to get in the squad. The tough thing is to get into the team and then stay in it. He's competing on another level.”

Ireland drew Bosnia and Herzegovina in their Euro 2016 play-off.
