There were plenty of talking points for Brentford boss Dean Smith to mull over following Brentford's 3-1 defeat at Wolves yesterday.

Josh McEachran made his first start of the season in place of Nico Yennaris but was stretchered off, while Lewis Macleod was also later taken off injured.

The other change Smith made was to bring in Yoann Barbet for Andreas Bjelland at left-back, the duo continuing to take it in turns to deputise for the injured Callum Elder.

There were two big penalty shouts, one for each side, which were both turned down by the ref, while a sixth booking of the season for Ryan Woods means he will miss Tuesday's home game against Reading.

Smith on the injuries

“I think Josh had a contact injury where he had the metatarsal injury, but he's plated now, so he's naturally going to feel pain if he takes a whack on there. But it's too early to tell, the cast was precautionary.

“He's been champing at the bit, so it's a shame for him. He played his way into the side. Although Nico's been struggling with a long term calf problem, the performances Josh has given when he's come on have earned him his chance.

“I think Lewis will be okay. He just opened up his knee joint slightly, but he feels fine now, so it was was just precautionary to bring him off.”

Smith on the left back position

“It's a case of them (Barbet and Bjelland) playing and keeping the shirt. Andreas came on at half time at Brighton, played the full game at Villa, and then 80 minutes against Preston last week, and it's probably just took its toll on a body that's been out for 12 months. He will be fit for Tuesday.

“Callum's still got his knee in a brace, but it feels really food, which is the positive. We just need to nurse him back to fitness, I'm sure it won't be too long. Tom Field has got a slight groin strain which keeps niggling away, but he's not far away either.”

Smith on Ryan Woods' suspension

“Woodsy was booked for I don't know what and he now misses Tuesday. He's probably got to learn to curb his enthusiasm a little bit as five bookings in nine games is quite a lot.

"It's something he will have to look at, but we don't want to stop him playing. I thought his booking was ridiculous today, they just jumped into each other. We won't be too hard on him.”

Smith on the game itself

“It was a poor first half, and I thought there was nothing in it at all. I thought they had the greater share of possession, probably territory as well, but their keeper's made the best save, from Scott Hogan, and for all their possession and territory, I don't think Dan Bentley was troubled too much.

“It was a good finish for the first, but the second was never a free kick. For me, it was a typical Championship game which could have gone either way, but they got their tails up with the first goal.”

Smith on the penalty calls

“Theirs was a good call from the ref. We watched it back and he actually kicks the back of Maxime's leg, who had got in front of him. He goes down a bit theatrical, as he did a number of times.

“Ours was a blatant one for me. The fourth official said he saw it hit the Wolves player, but he thought it was his head rather than his outstretched arm.”
