Dean Smith is looking forward to 2016 after a strong first month in charge of Brentford in 2015.

The Bees have won three, drawn two and lost one of the former Walsall boss' first month in charge of the club.

These results have left the Bees four points adrift of the play-offs, a remarkable turnaround from being one point above the drop zone at the start of October.

Smith said: “It finished on a positive note and we're looking forward to the new year now. It's been a good year for Brentford in getting to the play-offs in their first year back in the Championship.

“In my six games, I've been really pleased with the performance of the players. It fills me with hope for the next few months of the season.

“There could have been more points. Jota's disallowed goal at Fulham. Cardiff's last minute goal in our only defeat.

“Our performance against Brighton deserved more. We have to concentrate on the next few games and get as many points as we can.”

After looking as if Brentford were in a relegation battle 10 games in, there is a renewed confidence that the Bees can challenge for promotion glory come May.

And Smith believes the turnaround has given the club a chance of achieving their promotion dream.

He added: “The aims are to finish as high as we can. It was a great end to last season, getting into the play-offs.

“We've given ourselves a chance after a tough start. Our aim is to finish as high as we can. We'll give ourselves every chance to do that.”

Due to the sterling job Lee Carsley did in his temporary role in charge of the club, Smith hasn't had to make many changes to how the club train.

“Only minor ones really. Just little bits and bobs of organisation – set pieces for and against. The team were doing well when I took over so it only needed minor alterations,” he added.

“From what I've seen so far, we can compete in every game. There's no reason why we can't get enough points to compete for the top six place.”
