Dean Smith looks at how well a player is as a role model for others on and off the pitch when it comes to choosing a captain.

The Brentford head coach is currently deciding who should replace Harlee Dean as skipper after the decision to take the captaincy off him, given the speculation over his future.

Obviously, Smith wants a captain who is a regular in the team but, away from that, he wants them to be an individual to rally around.

He said: “Good behaviours on and off the training ground. Being a good professional and someone others would want to follow and if they did they'd be a better person and player for it.”

John Egan

John Egan led the side at Sheffield United and Nico Yennaris wore the armband at AFC Wimbledon and Smith has yet to decide who shall be the first choice captain when both are playing.

He added: “I've got to pick the team first and then I'll pick a captain from that. I think someone will grow into that position.

“We've got a leadership group at the club which the players have voted for and my decision is who will be captain on a game to game basis.

“If I feel someone has grown into that position, then we'll confirm them as the team captain.”
