Character: Dean Smith

Dean Smith has called on his Brentford players to once again prove they have the character to bounce back from a disappointing result.

Questions were asked of the Bees' mettle when they conceded two injury time goals to let a two-goal lead slip against QPR last month, but they bounced back in style by beating Fulham in another derby six days later.

Instead of building on that, Smith's men went down 3-2 at Hull City last Saturday, but the Bees boss is confident his side will put that frustration behind them again quickly when Barnsley visit Griffin Park tomorrow.

“The focus this week has been on getting the attitude and application right as we didn't perform well in the second half at Hull City, and we looked less cohesive than we have all season,” said Smith.

“That was the disappointing part of the game on Saturday – it's a game we felt we should have won, especially after taking the lead. Our ball possession wasn't as good as it normally is and neither was the way we use the ball.

“We've been working hard on that this week and we want to put that result to bed straight away. We've been good at coming back from poor performances or results and we have to do that again.

“You've got to have that character to bounce back from those knocks as you get plenty of them in this league, and it's how you recover from them. We played well at QPR apart from 75 seconds of madness, but we responded to that with a good performance against Fulham. It was disappointing to them have a poor 35 minutes at Hull.”

One factor which will count in Brentford's favour tomorrow is it being a home game, with the Bees not having lost in the league at Griffin Park since the first week of the season.

“It's good to be back at home and our home form is strong,” said Smith. “I don't think we've been beaten there since the first week of the season.

“We've probably drawn too many games at home, but we're on a decent run there. We've beaten Fulham, and beaten Leeds previous to that, so we want to make sure we continue that.

“We're scoring lots at home and they're coming from all areas too – not just from centre forwards but wide players and centre backs too – which is something we work on.”
