Jota has missed out on being named as the SkyBet Championship's best player in February as Preston midfielder Aiden McGeady won the award.

The silky skilled Spaniard was up for the award alongside Huddersfield's Izzy Brown, Cardiff's Kenneth Zohore and McGeady but the panel opted to name the Preston man as the Championship's leading player in February.

Jota had a magnificent month, scoring five goals including a hat-trick against Rotherham United, and set up a further three.

The wing wizard has been just as good in March, scoring and assisting at Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night.

The snub will come as a slight disappointment to those at Griffin Park who feel Jota has brought the fun back to Brentford with his general play.

Jota is, technically, out of contract at Griffin Park this summer but the club have an option for a further year and fans are keen for that to be activated sooner rather than later or, better yet, a long term contract agreed.

When pressed on the situation, Smith said: “There's an option for the football club. I'm sure the directors of football will be on that.”
