Brentford produced a terrible performance as their Carabao Cup adventure was halted by a rampant Norwich side.

The Bees fell behind to Marco Vrancic's penalty after Chris Mepham brought down Marley Watkins.

Yoann Barbet then blazed a spot kick over the bar after Wes Hoolahan tripped Kamo Mokotjo, although replays suggested he got the ball.

Vrancic doubled the Canaries' advantage in the second half as he curled a free kick home after Josh McEachran was penalised on the edge of the area.

Josh Murphy was given the freedom of Griffin Park to make it 3-0 and meant that Josh Clarke's stoppage time strike was little more than scant consolation.

Below are five talking points to emerge from the game.

Apologies are due

Theo Archibald

I hope that when Ilias Chatzitheodoridis, Theo Archibald and Chris Mepham turn up at Jersey Road, they are approached by the senior pros offering them an apology.

The experienced players let them down against Norwich and while Mepham had a first start to forget, he was let down by the regulars.

The fact that Chatzitheodoridis, in my eyes anyway, was Brentford's best player in a 3-1 defeat speaks volumes.

Mystifying Midfield

Josh McEachran in action against Southampton's Dusan Tadic

Nico Yennaris may have been wearing the armband but I didn't see a captain on the pitch. The former Arsenal man has worked hard to establish himself in the first team and become an ever present in Dean Smith's side.

But his performance last night fell short of the standards that he would have set himself.

Kamo Mokotjo may be known as the general in his time at FC Twente but he's yet to show himself as that in red and white stripes.

It takes time to adjust to a new division and the South African needs to make that transition as quickly as possible.

As for Josh McEachran, his attitude has to be called into question after a performance that left a lot to be desired.

Tackling is not his strongest suit and he appears to go into challenges with a fear that he will suffer an injury, given his history.

It was his lack of challenge in the build up to Norwich's third goal that put the tin lid on a bad night for the club. McEachran, like the other midfielders must improve on that display.

Barbet pain

Yoann Barbet

Yoann Barbet's penalty was terrible and up there with James Tarkowski's spot kick against Leeds in 2014 and Kevin O'Connor's effort against Scunthorpe in 2007.

The Frenchman will know he didn't perform at the levels that he would expect from himself.

What does need to be considered is that Barbet had never been the senior centre back before and had a young defender making his first start.

The 24-year-old has made just over 50 appearances in senior football himself and maybe the added responsibility played a part in his performance.

Mepham will learn from this

Chris Mepham needlessly gave away a penalty. There was no need to put his hands onto the back of Marley Watkins in that position. He'll know that himself.

It certainly meant that it was a baptism of fire. It's clear there is a good defender in Mepham but he will need time to adapt to the rigours of senior football.

With a five year contract now signed, it may be worth Brentford considering a loan move to give him the regular senior football he needs to thrive.

Bolton is a must-win

Norwich was the worst performance from Brentford in 2017 and it was poorer than the defeats at Wigan and Preston in the early part of the year.

It was also the type of display that calls a manager/head coach's role into question from the supporters.

This means that the trip to the Macron Stadium is now vital. I'm sure if you said to the fans that if there was a game to win and a game to lose, the Carabao Cup tie was the one to taste defeat in.

But, that makes Saturday of vital importance now. Win and things calm down slightly. Lose and it could be a very interesting evening against Derby next Tuesday.
