Mark Warburton hailed midfield general Jonathan Douglas after Brentford beat Reading.

The experienced Irishman sealed a 3-1 win for the Bees late on after first-half goals from Jota and Alex Pritchard had put the hosts in the driving seat.

Holding midfielder Douglas has already netted three times this season - the same number he managed in the whole of last campaign.

Happy man: Brentford manager Mark Warburton

And boss Warburton says the 32-year-old's contribution is invaluable.

He said: "Dougie came back in the summer looking lean and hungry and he’s been outstanding. It’s a testament to the hard work he’s put in.

"His experience defensively is much needed. He marshalls the troops and the younger players learn a lot from him.

"He knows when to get forward. For the goal, he just wanted the ball more. He was committed and got his just rewards."

The win moved Brentford to within two points of the play-off places, and Warburton added: "It’s a very pleasing result.

"This group of players will keep on pushing and are demanding of themselves, but if we drop that then we’re in trouble."
