Barnet hero Mauro Vilhete paid tribute to the Bees fans after scoring the two goals that secured promotion to the Football League.

The winger found the net in each half to give his team a 2-0 victory over Gateshead, which rendered Bristol Rovers' 7-0 win over Gateshead redundant and secured the Conference title for Barnet.

He said: “The fans today were immense, as they have been for the whole season, so this one is for the fans.”

His first goal came from a perfectly weighted free kick that he guided into the net and his second came from a corner that he blasted home.

And the hero revealed the Bees have been practising those particular set-piece moves on the training ground.

He said: “We have been working on our set pieces. We knew they would focus on the big men so me and (Andy) Yiadom would be free.

“I had a vision of where the ball was going so I went there and luckily tucked it away.”

Those strikes took the 21-year-old's tally to five for the season and he admitted to being slightly disappointed not to have more over the campaign.

He explained: “I should have got a few more but I’m glad I managed to get another two.

“I told Togs (Sam Togwell) at half time they are not marking me or Yids so what he needed to do was deliver them as early as possible and he has gone and delivered it as soon as he got there. I told him it would happen and it went down.”
