Martin Allen admitted Barnet’s final home game of the season was a bit of a damp squib after their slim hopes of reaching the Conference Premier play-offs were extinguished before a ball had even been kicked.

The Bees had a late kick-off with Braintree Town at the Hive on Easter Monday and victories earlier in the day for Gateshead and Grimsby Town made it mathematically impossible for Allen’s side to finish in the top five.

Barnet went on to hold the Essex club to a 1-1 draw , meaning Alan Devonshire’s men will take their own fight for a spot in the end-of-season lottery to the final game and hope other results go their way.

Keanu Marsh-Brown’s stunning shot was a moment to savour against the Iron, although Kenny Davis’ second-half penalty levelled the score and only went to spoil the party further on a subdued day in Edgware.

“We heard about the results before the game, so any slight possibility [of reaching the play-offs] was taken away,” Allen said.

“That was difficult for the players and supporters who perhaps through the week have been edging towards there being a possibility.

"So there was a bit of an anti-climax in the dressing room and probably in the stands. That was difficult first and foremost because we were all still hoping.”

The curtain comes down on the season this Saturday when Barnet travel to Lincoln City, with all of the division’s fixtures kicking off at 5.30pm.
