Neal Ardley thinks it would take an amazing run of victories for AFC Wimbledon to make the play-offs despite watching his team end a run of three straight defeats against Accrington Stanley.

The Dons were 2-1 winners at Kingsmeadow as Sean Rigg and Ade Azeez gave them a two-goal lead before Adam Buxton pulled one back for the visitors late on.

But despite being just five points shy of Bury in seventh, the Wimbledon manager is not convinced his boys can break into the end-of-season lottery.

He said: “Personally I think the top eight teams are solid and consistent, and I can’t see them losing too many games.

“However from our point of view we would have to go on one amazing run to challenge for the play-off places.

“But if you look at where we were a year ago we’ll challenge for it and we’ll try to build some momentum.

“And if we can hopefully finish in the top half that would be a big plus. But I honestly think it is an uphill struggle.”

Opener: Sean Rigg nets against Accrington Stanley

Ardley congratulated his AFC Wimbledon side after their 2-1 victory over Accy in what was a steady victory at Kingsmeadow.

It was a tight finish with Buxton scoring a late consolation goal but Ardley never felt the result was truly at threat.

He added: “I thought it was a hard fought win, but at the same time I thought it was reasonably comfortable.

“I didn’t feel as though we were going to lose it as this week we were naturally composed and balanced.

“And I knew Accrington would try get the upper hand on us, but as the game came to a close we did what was needed and got the three points today.”

The January transfer window has seen Ardley bring in four new players, with three featuring in today's home encounter.
