Neal Ardley stated after AFC Wimbledon’s victory that he doesn’t want to waste his time investing in a player who he believes wouldn’t make it into the current first team.

AFC Wimbledon made it six games unbeaten at home on Saturday after a 1-0 victory against Portsmouth.

A Ben Chorley own goal in the early stages of the game forced by the tricky work done by Craig Tanner gave the hosts a healthy lead. Yet Portsmouth couldn’t make their chances count, while Tanner’s work rate showed he is a strong option to start for Ardley.

The Dons manager later made it clear he doesn’t want to waste the club’s money in a decision that could backfire.

“No, there is no one out there who is better than we have,” the Dons manager said.

“We have a great fan base here who put a lot of money into this club, so why would I waste everybody’s money on a player who will be sitting on the bench who is not as good as the players we have at the moment.”

Considering Wimbledon won 1-0 the lack of goals have always hovered around the ground, but in Ardley’s mind-set if it was to come down new players, his trust would in the academy team.

“If George Oakley was fit he’d be back in and if not we’d be using our own academy players instead, because I have a lot of faith in them.

“I mean at the moment I don’t want to take Craig Tanner out of the team after the game he played today.”

AFC Wimbledon move above Portsmouth in the League but at the moment the 42-year-old isn’t look at the future, but what he can gain out of his players for the closing stages of the season.

“We always plan behind the scenes. Our focus still has to be on games ahead, I have to push the players on and drive them hard for the last few weeks and hopefully finish strongly.”

The Don’s next game is away to Tranmere Rovers on Saturday who sit just above the relegation zone in League Two.
