Fitness

Conte: If you want to win you must play good, attractive football but also have a good physical condition. If you run more than the others, you have more probability to win

Passion

Conte: I have great passion for football, for my team and my work. I want to transfer my passion to my players, also to my fans. I suffer during the game. I want my players and the fans to see this. We work very hard to reach our targets

Experience from Italy stint and Mourinho comparisons

Conte: What I’ll bring with me from Italy is everything I’ve learned from my playing and coaching career. I’ll try and represent my country and this is a great responsibility for me. I’ll try and make my compatriots proud. It’s tough to compare people. There are managers who are winners. I think, regardless of the job they do, there is a winning mentality certain coaches have. I believe there are winners in football and not everyone has that.

First thing that struck you by Chelsea and do you have the feeling an Italian will win?

Conte: I felt emotional about coming to Chelsea today. I’m very proud and know I’ve worked very hard to get here as well. The league will be tough and I hope the Premier League title winners deserve to have taken the title. I hope we’re underrated - I hope we’re in there and can surprise people and can motivate us further. I hope there’s a small flame that can become a blazing inferno.

Spoken to other Italian bosses?

Conte: I didn’t have much time. It was only a week ago my mind was on Italy. In the coming days I’ll call Claudio Ranieri because he’s a lovely man and I’ll ask him for advice. I’m clued up on trying to come in with respect, a low profile and get to grips to the country.

Representing Italy

Conte: I think there are a number of Italian coaches who represent us including Claudio Ranieri who achieved something extraordinary. We’re representing Italy. It’s an incredible atmosphere. I’ve seen it on TV only. I feel I’m representing Italy.

Brexit question?

A question in Italian - only word I understood was Brexit!

Should players expect a revolution or is it 'special work'?

You know I try and bring my ideas to Chelsea and I’m sure that’s one of the reasons why the club brought me in. I hope we can achieve something big and challenging for the title. Whereas elsewhere the title may be between one or two there are six or seven and Leicester City are an example of this. I’ll leave the task of ‘special work’ to your English colleagues.

Transfers

I prefer not to speak. We must take a player to adapt to our idea of football for our philosophy. It’s not right to say the names because these players are in another team. I don’t want another manager to speak of my players and I don’t like to do the same.

Battle between managers

In this league, there are many players with great talent and fantastic players. There are good managers and I think this is very important for the league for all. I think a good coach or manager must improve his players and must work to improve the situation in the club. The situation is fantastic. It is not a tournament between managers, it’s between teams and players and this is the most important thing. I think the most important thing is when there is a game between Chelsea, United, City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham – all of them.

Assurances?

Conte: I decided to leave the national team after our qualification in Europe. I wanted to go back to breathe the grass and stay with my players and to stay day by day to work with them and for this reason, I decided to go back into club football and then I had this great opportunity to speak with Chelsea; a great club. I’m very happy we find a fantastic solution for me and the club to work together.

Message to players

Conte: The most important message is that I’m a worker and I like to work and I know only this road to win and to go back to play the Champions League, to winning the title. I only know work, work and work. I’m very happy because I found the right attitude in Cobham and I’m very happy with this.

How would he like to be seen?

Conte: I’m not very good to find a different name. I hope during the season this opportunity comes up. I hope to be a good name, not a bad name (laughs)

Three at the back

Conte: I search to find the right position for the players. The manager or coach is like a tailor. You must be a dress and the best dress for the team and you have to respect the characteristics and the talents of the players. In the past, I started with one idea of football and then I changed it as I saw these players didn’t suit it. It’s not important for us. It’s very important if we want to go back and compete for the title and to give good organisation to give good training in tactics and in the physical aspect. I feel I can improve my players. It’s important that there must be a great spirit and I’m sure we can improve through the work.

Tactical plans

Conte: We started to work and I think that every manager has their own methods and own philosophy of football. I want to transfer my ideas and methods to my players. I think it’s important to work under different aspects to become strong and to help us overcome the difficulty of the transition. I think it’s very important. It’s important that you have players that give you great attitude. I’m very happy about this as I know to have players ready to fight and to play good football and to transfer our passion, our emotion and our fans. This is the most important thing. Win or lose, but if we can transfer our passion and our football to the fans it’ll be a victory for me, the players and the club.

How much pressure are you under?

Conte: The pressure for me is not important. I was born with pressure and the pressure is not important for me. It’s normal as when you are a player or manager of a great club. You must play to win, to win the title or to fight at the end and compete against other teams to reach your targets. I know this league is very difficult because there are six or seven teams that can win the title and, for this reason, this situation is very exciting for me. We know that this year won’t be easy for us because if we think of last season, the 10th position, it was a bad season. We all know it. We must think about the present, to work very hard every day, week month to win something for the club and for the fans. The fans need to find a team ready to fight until the end and to compete with the other teams. I know only one team wins the title but we must be fighting at the end of the season. Chelsea belongs in the Champions League and we must stay there.

How much say did you have in Terry staying?

Conte: I said John Terry is an important player for me and the club. Our decision, we take together. Me, the club and I’m pleased that John Terry signed a new deal with Chelsea. I’m very happy. I spoke with him at different times. For me, it was important that John was very happy when he signed.

  • Share

John Terry's role?

Conte: John Terry signed a contract as a player, not as a different role. He’s our captain. He’s a great player with a great personality and great charisma. I’d like to speak with him as he knows the club, the right spirit to play here. For me, he’s an important player. All the players know that I’ll see on the pitch to choose my starting XI. When a player deserves to play, he’ll play. He’ll be captain. He’s John Terry - he’s the captain. When he plays he’s captain. He’s captain on and off the pitch.

What does Chelsea need to become a title winning team?

Conte: It’s our second day in training at Cobham. It’s fantastic to work there. In those two days I saw players with the right attitude and a great will to fight for this shirt and to fight to get back to competing to win the title very soon. I’m very glad to see these things and it’s very very important.

English

Conte: I forgot to excuse my English. I’m studying English and, in the future, my preparation about this language is important.

Conte: Good afternoon everyone. It’s a great pleasure for me to sit here. I’m very happy. I think that I work a lot to sit here and I’m excited for this moment and to start a new season with Chelsea. This is a new chapter for my life and for my career and for my family. I’m very happy to start and work in a new country, a fantastic country and a fantastic league. I think that this league is very difficult - the most difficult in the world because six or seven teams can win the title. Chelsea is a great team and I’m very proud to be the new manager of this great team. I’m very happy.
