AFC Wimbledon manager Neal Ardley says he only had to glance down the touchline at Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho today to see the kind of never-say-die attitude he wants to bring to Kingsmeadow next season.

The Dons made a blistering start to this pre-season friendly as Alan Bennett struck within 38 seconds and Matt Tubbs won and converted a first-half penalty to send Wimbledon in two goals to the good at the break.

However, a much-changed Chelsea second-half XI came roaring back as John Terry claimed a brace and Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah found the net to give Mourinho’s side another victory against League Two opposition.

Winning formula: Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho salutes the fans

It was all very frustrating for Ardley, who had been delighted with the way his team started the game, and watched Mourinho celebrate the Blues goals with gusto to leave him searching for the same winning mentality his opposite number has developed at Stamford Bridge.

Ardley said: “Pre-season just for fitness doesn’t fit with me. I want to win games. I’m annoyed today, don’t get me wrong.

"I’m not going to come here and say look at the performance we put in. I say that today wasn’t about the result, it was about the performance and I got it for 70 minutes today.

Bouncing back: Things weren't look so rosy for Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho at half time

“I’m annoyed. I’m annoyed we lost the game on two set-pieces. I’m annoyed the players that come on didn’t play with enough discipline and enough tactical know-how to carry on the good work that had gone before.

"For me, it’s not good enough. I want to win games of football and we’ve got to put that right in the next four games.

“I want a winning mentality. The opposing man today played five up front with 20 minutes to go and pushed a centre-half up front. He’s not settling for ‘it’s just a pre-season friendly’. He sees it as ‘we’re 2-0 down and this is a challenge’.

Match winner: Chelsea's John Terry in action against the Dons

“He changed his tactics and his team got themselves out of the mess they’d got themselves into.

"That’s a winning mentality. Even being 2-0 down with 10 minutes to go they believe they can still win the game and that’s what I want. I don’t want to be a nearly-man and just say we’ve been unlucky. It’s a tough league.”

Wimbledon continue their pre-season preparations by taking on Sutton United on Tuesday, while Mourinho’s Chelsea side fly out to Austria on Monday.
