Martin Allen believes Barnet are underdogs in the race to secure a Skrill Premier play-off spot.

The Bees recorded a vital 2-1 home victory over Forest Green Rovers at the Hive on Saturday.

It was a result that lifted Barnet to eighth in the table.

But they remain three points behind Halifax Town, who occupy the final play-off position with five games remaining.

In his previous spells as manager of Barnet, Allen has helped to guide the side to unlikely survivals from relegation when deemed outsiders.

And the former Gillingham gaffer says he will need to spring a similar surprise again this time if he is to guide the Bees into the top five.

“There is still a long way to go and we are the underdogs,” Allen explained. “We’re outsiders without a shadow of a doubt.

“We’ve got another game on Tuesday [against Southport] and that’s another three points to play for.”

Goals from Valentin Gjokaj and Mark Byrne helped to extend Allen's unbeaten record to three games in his fourth spell at Barnet against Rovers on Saturday, making it a fine day’s work for Allen.

The 48-year-old added: "I thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon. It was a very good first half performance and a testing second half display.

"The crowd got behind the players and they were fantastic in the last 20 minutes after the equaliser. The players responded to the backing from the supporters because it was looking a little tricky at one stage.

“They showed great character and it was a good win. The players have worked very hard and are conscientious. They’re honest and hardworking, as a manager or supporter you can’t ask any more than that."
