The name Tranmere is a dirty word around AFC Wimbledon - according to Sean Rigg.

Results against the beleaguered Rovers, as well as points surrendered to Northampton at home and Hartlepool away are symptomatic of the reasons Dons face a mid-table scrap against Oxford tomorrow rather than a full-blooded assault on the play-offs, reckons the AFC winger.

Rigg has a good memory.

Cobblers: That's Northampton, although Sean Rigg (R) might be thinking something else

The 2-2 home draw with Tranmere was back in October, but it was the start of the rot that has been repeated far too often, namely, a late surrender as the other side bagged a goal or two.

“There’s been too many games we’ve been in front, or about to claim a point, and not hung on,” Rigg said.

“Hartlepool (away), Tranmere at home and Tranmere away; Northampton at home come to mind.

“If we’d have won all them we’d be up there. We need to learn to stay strong mentally at the end, and it’s not been good enough. But if we finish on a high, we can start on a high next season.”

Rigg has no idea what goes on in the dressing room for the last five minutes during half time.

The 26-year-old has been told to warm up ahead of his team-mates and be ready to fly into the second half.

He joked: “If we still drank tea, I wouldn’t be able to finish mine, because I need to get my legs going five minutes earlier than the rest. It helps me on a personal level.”

Dons plan to bounce back against Oxford after what appears to have been a terrible performance in a 4-0 defeat to Dagenham & Redbridge on Easter Monday.

Rigg reckons that’s not exactly the case.

“People will look at that and think we got battered,” he added. “But we played some great football, and maybe we tried walking the ball into the net rather than taking more shots. So it was a really funny one, but frustrating.

“All the pretty football in the end doesn’t matter unless you take your chances. So we need to put that right."
