Tom Elliott can’t wait to return to the scene of some of his greatest memories in football when AFC Wimbledon travel to the Abbey Stadium this weekend.

The Dons are looking for another three points on the road at Cambridge United on Saturday after ending their long wait for a victory on Bank Holiday Monday at Exeter.

Elliott, who joined Wimbledon from the U’s in the summer, was on target against the Grecians and says he is firing on all cylinders as he prepares to take on his old club.

He said: “I enjoyed my three years at there but I enjoyed scoring against them here earlier in the season too. I always like playing in that stadium and it should be a good game.

“They didn’t deserve to beat us here earlier in the season so we need to go there and be solid. We’ve played better away from home this season so we’ve got a good chance and the boys will all be well up for it.

“I had some great memories of my time at Cambridge. We won promotion, played at Wembley, played Manchester United twice. I had a great time and that set me up to come here. I felt I needed a new challenge and some fresh scenery.”

Options: Neal Ardley and his AFC Wimbledon strikeforce

Wimbledon sit right in the middle of the League Two table at the halfway point in the season and Elliott knows things will really start to hot up in the weeks to come.

The tall striker is salivating at the prospect and says fixtures hold no fear for him having overcome some fitness issues and forced his way back into manager Neal Ardley’s thinking.

He added: “I scored a few at the start of the season when I had a little run but then I came down with some niggly injuries.

“I’m fighting fit now. We’ve got four good strikers and the gaffer can pick whoever he wants so it’s up to me to prove to him that I should be on that pitch.

“Christmas is always a busy period and now we’re going into the New Year. We’re getting towards the business end of the season and we need to get up that table and get points on the board if we are to achieve what we know we’re capable of.”
