Neal Ardley doesn’t want AFC Wimbledon to become reliant on one source of goals and has instead set his squad a collective target.

Summer signing Lyle Taylor is the club’s top scorer so far with five strikes to his name but the Dons also have Tom Elliott, Ade Azeez and Bayo Akinfenwa to pick from up front.

Andy Barcham and Dannie Bulman also chipped in with the odd netbuster this term before the former was struck down by knee ligament damage that has halted his progress.

The injury to the former Portsmouth winger is more evidence that players can be removed from the reckoning with the blink of an eye and boss Ardley wants to spread the goals around to avoid a dry spell.

He said: “It’s not about who scores the goals. We’ve said we’re not looking to have a 20-goal-a-season striker, that would be a bonus, we’re looking for the strikers to work together.

“We’re looking for the wide players to work, the central midfielders and anyone that is in that group of 10 or 12 players, we’ve set them a target of 65 goals minimum.

“Who scores them, assists them, plays a part in them, it doesn’t really matter. The more that goes on, the more unselfish they’ll be and the more they’ll play for the team.”

Saturday’s 3-1 triumph at York City made it back-to-back wins for Wimbledon for the first time this season.

Those six points have pushed the Dons up to the halfway point in the League Two standings and the Kingsmeadow chief expects the rise up the ladder to continue.

He added: “We know what our achilles heel has been, we’re not stupid. We look back at games and we know that we’re a really good team.

“I’ve not looked at many teams and thought they were much better than us, but we’re working at the bit which has cost us too much.

“I don’t look at the league. People will say you’re 16th, you’re 14th, but you just try to accumulate the points and try and keep going.

“We talk about it a lot and we believe we should be in the top half and challenging - that will always be the aim until the last day.”
