The crucial next 24 hours will determine whether Andy Barcham is out for six months or six weeks.

AFC Wimbledon boss Neal Ardley is holding his breath for the winger who needed 10 minutes-worth of treatment until he was stretchered off, both legs strapped, in the 5-2 defeat to Morecambe.

Barcham was caught from behind by Shrimps defender Shaun Beeley on 30 minutes, and holding his knee, went down and stayed down.

But Ardley was reluctant to blame the injury for his side’s worst defeat of the season.

Wait: Barcham

“I can’t look for excuses because of that,” he said. “We didn’t deal with their counter attacking good enough. "For 20 minutes in the second half, it was whether we could get the third goal when it was 2-3 to them.

“But the fourth was a breakaway, and the last 10 minutes we were really poor.

“We hadn’t lost two games on the trot to this one: a silly penalty; a bad set piece just before the break - ii was a really bad day at the office.”

Worried: Neal Ardley

Barcham will undergo a scan tomorrow when Ardley and team-mates will know the worst.

“I’m sure it’s not going to be a week he’s out,” the manager added.

“The lad caught him late and his knee buckled underneath him. We hope it’s more an MCL (medial cruciate ligament) injury than anything else: that’s six weeks rather than six months. But until we know, it’s just guessing.”
