Mum was the word for AFC Wimbledon's Chris Robertson.

A kid on the way for he and the missus was reason enough for the centre half to swap life in the Highlands in favour of life in League One.

With daughter, Penelope, due any day, the former Torquay centre-back turned his back on the security of another year with Ross County to head for Dons.

With Paul Robinson, Darius Charles and the highly thought of Will Nightingale already in situ, the move to London was seen as a punt.

For Robertson though, a move nearer family trumped any concerns over first-team football.

“There was a lot going on, and it was probably the worst time to move clubs," he said.

"But sometimes you do things because your personal life is a bit more important than your football career.

“You have to do what is best for the family and the missus.

“Inverness is eight hours from here and I got back down this way once last year as it was just impossible to travel.

“So, I decided I was going to have to change something. I had a year left on my contract but my manager was great about it and the gaffer here wanted a centre-half and I fitted the bill.

“My wife’s family are from Canterbury and mine are from Nottingham so it was in the middle of both really, a perfect match.”

As fate would have it, injury to Charles has seen opportunity knock for Robertson earlier than expected. He has since formed a solid partnership with Paul Robinson.

“There are guarantees of a place wherever you go and whoever you have got in front of you,” Robertson added.

“It is part and parcel of football, so if you have got two, three or four centre-halves great - I will do all I can to get in a team and stay in it."
