AFC Wimbledon’s Paul Robinson can now claim a Premier League winner amongst his previous play-off scalps.

Leicester’s Danny Drinkwater was part of a Huddersfield side vanquished by Robinson when the defensive stalwart was part of the Millwall rear-guard back in 2009-10.

It wasn’t just Drinkwater the now 34-year-old had to contend with in that Terriers side in a 2-0 aggregate win back then on route to play-off glory.

“We played an incredibly strong Huddersfield team which included Jordan Rhodes, Danny Drinkwater, Gary Roberts, Kevin Pilkington and Lee Peltier, players who went on to have really good careers, so over two legs that was two really good results for us,” he said.

Saturday’s 1-0 win over Accrington Stanley in the League Two play-off semi-final first leg against Accrington Stanley means Robinson is 90 minutes and one good result away from another day at Wembley.

Man of the match in that first leg , Robinson is too experienced to be getting ahead of himself with thoughts of the national stadium, claiming the secrets of his success with the Lions those years ago were focusing on the task in hand and controlling the adrenalin and excitement that comes with knockout football.

“The key thing that sticks in my mind is we just used to approach every individual game on an individual basis, get your best result on the day and that is usually enough to see you through the tie,” he added.

“You have to control the excitement and adrenalin and use it at the right moment. It is about focusing, working when you need to work and relaxing when you need to relax, so that when it comes to kick-off you are ready for the game ahead.”
