Not for the first time Adebayo Akinfenwa's reputation cost him a goal against Hartlepool on Saturday according to AFC Wimbledon boss Neal Ardley.

'The Beast,' as he loves to be tagged, rose majestically at the far post to power home what looked to be a killer third goal for the hosts against hapless Pool, only for his trademark goal celebration to be cut short when referee Collins deemed him guilty of a push on his marker.

'Nonsense' said Ardley in the post-match media huddle, claiming his strongman striker had been penalised simply for doing what he does better than anyone else - being tough.

"I thought the disallowed goal was harsh and it sums up what happens with Bayo," he said.

"He is the strongest player in the league and he gets pulled up for being the strongest player in the league. It is like taking a quick player who runs in behind and pulling him up and giving a free-kick every time he out-paces someone. It is ridiculous."

Ardley revealed he had thought long and hard about restoring his talismanic front-man and fans' favourite to the starting XI against Pool, thinking his combative style would be tactically better suited to the defensive minded visitors.

Nevertheless, he eventually chose to stick with namesake Adebayo Azeez instead, concluding the youngster's recent form meant he deserved to keep the shirt.

He added: "You work hard to earn your place and we are not at the point of squad rotation at a club like ours."

"My concern was Hartlepool would play deep which would suit 'B' (Afinfenwa) more than Ade (Azeez) because he would not have anywhere to run into, but we caused them enough problems in the first half despite that.

The second half when I kept seeing them dropping and Ade didn't have as much space to run it felt right to bring 'B' on because it suits him when the opposition defence drops.

"You can go in off him and anything you want and some of our moves showed that."
