The infamous moment when referee Clive Thomas blew for time just as Zico scored a potential winner for Brazil against Sweden at World Cup 1978 - now has a rival for horrible howler.

AFC Wimbledon dodged a bullet against Acccrington when Trevor Kettle blasted on his whistle for half time at the exact second Stanley's Billy Kee netted to raise hackles in BOTH camps.

Dons’ boss Neal Ardley labelled the incident 'ridiculous' before revealing referee Kettle could have blown 20 seconds earlier and avoided the infamy which followed.

“I have got two hats on with it,” he said “If it went against me I would feel exactly how (Accrington manager) John Coleman does that it was ridiculous to blow just as he was about to release his shot.

Controversial: Trevor Kettle cancelled out a Stanley strike on the 'H' of half time

“In fairness to the ref the fourth official had said to him it was time 20 seconds earlier. I was standing there and the fourth official said time. He had originally put three minutes up and that time had gone.

“If the ref had blown up 20 seconds earlier when he told him it was time there would not have been a problem, but the referee's choice of timing has made it a controversial decision.”

While Ardley accepted his side had dodged a bullet in that moment, he felt Dons were unlucky themselves when Stanley keeper Ross Ethridge deliberately handled Lyle Taylor’s goal-bound effort outside the box on 85 minutes.

An absolute circus followed as substitute keeper Jason Mooney took five minutes to get dressed before making his appearance, that was something Ardley saw the funny side of.

'Ridiculous' decison: Neal Ardley

“Their keeper had no socks on, no shorts on, no top on so by the time he was ready it was like my wife having to get dressed to go out," he said.

“You always tell your players have their gear ready and their pads on.

"Their goalkeeper was completely the opposite, but you have to give credit to the first goalkeeper because he stopped us winning the game 1-0 as he has stopped a goal going in. Lyle has lobbed it over him and could run round and tap it in himself."

“If you look at the incident in the first half and then what their goalkeeper has done it probably evens itself out.

"They are hard done by that they never scored, while we are clearly hard done by that their keeper has illegally stopped it going into the back of the net.”
