Adebayo Akinfenwa lauded AFC Wimbledon as a unique club and is determined to put them in the same league as a team he refused to name; MK Dons.

The Dons claimed five promotions in their first six years and reached the Football League in 2011.

Now, five years on they have a chance to reach the third tier of English football and, for The Beast, it would be the icing on the cake.

He said: “When I signed for the club I knew about it. This is a unique club. You can't help but notice the passionate fans.

“They get involved. You can't help allowing it to captivate you. We started from the bottom and now we're here.

“It embodies the club and we can continue that fighting spirit and get promoted. We'd then be on the same playing field with the team we should not name.

“For everybody here, it'd be the icing on the cake. We're doing it for us. We're on the rise. To be in the same league as that team.

“It shows the growth of AFC Wimbledon. We know we've got that on our shoulders but we're looking forward to it.”

Akinfenwa is out of contract at the end of the campaign and he still feels he has two years left in him as a player.

Last summer, he weighed up the option to play in America but feels that staying in England is the best option.

He revealed: “I'll be going to America because I go there. I'm not as excited as I was last year about the brand. If I was going to go to America that was the time.

“I think I'll be in England next year. I don't know where I'll be. I'll sit down with the gaffer and see what the club's plans are.

“We'll sit down and see where I'm meant to be next season. I'll be where I'm meant to be. I was meant to be a part of this story. Hopefully it can be a good end.

“I've still got a good two years in me minimum. I feel good and stronger than I ever have. Gaffer doesn't overtrain us. I've got energy for games. At 36 I may think it's time to hang up my boots.”
