Frank Lampard can flourish in the World Cup next summer, however demanding this season turns out for him, according to Jose Mourinho.

The Chelsea boss, who watched his player come on as a second half substitute in the 2-0 win against Poland which clinched England's place in Brazil, says the midfielder will thrive because he has re-styled his game.

Lampard is no longer playing as a box-to-box player but operates in a holding midfield position these days, and that can prolong his career at the highest level, Mourinho believes.

“I don’t think anybody can play the same football, with the same characteristics at 20 when you are 35. You have to play different and adapt.

"But he’s doing it very well. In my first period here we were playing with three midfield players with one in front of a defensive line with the complete freedom to go and go and go.

“In this moment, we are playing with two midfielders and a number 10, so the midfielders are more positional. They don’t need to go forward so much.

“It’s good for his new life as a more mature football player. He’s in a stable moment in his career and keep this stability for quite a long time.”

Mourinho added: “I think the national team play with two midfield players and one behind the strikers. He’s more of a positional player.

"It’s easy for him. I think it’ll be no problem to him and to arrive in good condition to the World Cup.”
