If the climax to Heston Bombers' first ever season had been submitted as a film script, even Hollywood would have turned it away as being too fantastical.

Formed only last summer, the fledgling side looked all set to land the Middlesex County League Division Two title until they were deducted six points for non-payment of a £60 fine while their secretary was on holiday.

All of which meant they had to win all of their last seven games, playing them all in the space of two weeks, to take the title off Harrow side Greens United – which they promptly did.

But the manner in which they won their crucial last game against Tokyngton Manor left even the Heston players, who have had an astonishing debut season, shaking their heads in disbelief.

The start of it all: Bombers play their first ever competitive game back in September

Knowing not even a draw would be enough, Heston twice fell behind and twice came back, but it looked all over when they conceded a penalty a minute from time.

However, Tokyngton missed the spot kick and Heston raced up the field, and after being awarded a free kick, former Wycombe Wanderers youth teamer Pat Lynott slammed home the goal which clinched the title by a single point.

To add to the script, Heston had already suffered a double heartache, reaching a County Cup final, only to lose to FC Shepperton, and also reached the Division Two League Cup final, only to be thrown out, along with the other finalists, when both were found to have fielded ineligible players.

Club chairman Paul Burke said: “It has been an amazing first season, with plenty happening on and off the field, and we are just glad it ended on a positive note. The boys have been fantastic all season, but especially in the last two weeks. Greens United actually came down in a minibus to watch the final game, but to be fair to them, they all came over to congratulate us afterwards.”
