SECOND QUALIFYING ROUND: Staines Town 0 Hayes & Yeading United 0

Staines Town and Hayes & Yeading United played to a disappointing stalemate on Saturday at a sun soaked Wheatsheaf Park, making a replay at Church Road necessary last night (Tuesday).

For a game involving two teams in such good form, both failed to show much confidence going forward as defences reigned supreme.

Staines enjoyed most of the early possession but could only create two half chances for Richard Butler, the first being blocked by Tom Cadmore and the second going just wide.

United had their first effort on 27 mintues when a Josh Scott free kick almost drifted in at the far post, just evading Matt Ruby in the process.

Staines's Jake Newton hit a speculative volley narrowly wide before United enjoyed their first spell of pressure. First, a Will Hendry cross was battled for by Scott Fitzgerald and Lee Kersey and the loose ball popped out to Staforde Palmer who blasted a volley inches over.

Then Josh Scott got on the end of Palmer's pass and his long shot narrowly missed the post.

Elliott Onochie fired across the face of goal and headed straight at Aaron Howe in stoppage time, promising a more open second half.

However, it was 20 minutes old before another clear cut chance was made, Dean Thomas capping a strong run into the United box before firing straight at Howe.

United went close soon afterwards when Louis Wells spilled Hendry's low free kick and Fitzgerald just failed to scramble home the rebound.

Onochie got on the end of a long Wells clearance and put his shot just wide of the post soon afterwards, but the action slowed up once more and it was only a Palmer volley which Wells did well to block that threatened either goal in the latter stages.
