LV= COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE - DAY ONE

Middlesex 211-4

Somerset Yet to bat

Dawid Malan is on course for a century as he helped steer Middlesex towards a big total against Somerset at Uxbridge.

Malan was unbeaten on 90 at the close of a rain-shortened opening day with no play possible after tea.

They opted to bat after winning the toss, but suffered the early loss of captain Chris Rogers for just seven.

Fellow opener Nick Gubbins then hit a career-best 59 in a 109-run stand with Malan, who closed in on his second ton in as many Championship matches.

Malan was the main contributor in a 73-run partnership with Eoin Morgan (12) before rain stopped play at 211-4.

Peter Trego (2-39) was Somerset's most successful bowler, taking the wickets of Morgan and Neil Dexter.

Middlesex and Somerset, fifth and fourth in the table respectively, will both be hoping for victory to close the gap on leaders Nottinghamshire.
