It was a case of like father, like son at Hillingdon Manor on Saturday as Gary Hales rolled back the years to prove to his England star son he can still make an impact at the crease.

The former Gerrards Cross player is father to Nottinghamshire and England T20 regular Alex, who became the first Englishman to hit a century in the quick-fire format against Sri Lanka at the World Cup earlier this year.

Hales junior has signed with the Hobart Hurricanes for the Big Bash League’s 2014-15 season and joins the 2014 finalists after playing with the Adelaide Strikers last season, as well as spending an earlier stint with the Melbourne Renegades.

The veteran obviously taught his boy a thing or two about cricket and demonstrated his knowledge at the weekend to help Manor clinch a seven-wicket win in their derby with Ruislip.

Chairman Simon Webb did most of the damage with the ball for Manor as they restricted the visitors to 175-8 in their 50 overs with the bat, Mark Windsor claiming the bulk of that haul with an impressive 78.

But it was Hales who stole the show, smashing an unbeaten 73 to take his side past the target with just three wickets down against their near neighbours.

England star: Alex Hales

The result leaves Hillingdon Manor eighth in the Division 4A standings on 71 points after seven matches.

Ruislip are one place below them in ninth and trail them by just six points in what is shaping up to be a tight league.
